Step Up

“Good.” I responded and went to sit down.

Fred looked at me for a while as he continued placing some of the other stuff in the pantry.  I ignored him and tried to pretend I was busy looking at the other things.

“Are you okay?” He asked.

“I think so.” I replied. “Why?”

He came and sat next to me. “I can tell when things are not okay.”

I smiled and looked at him. “I think I might be pregnant.”

He stood up. “What did you say?”

“I think I might be pregnant.”

He held his hands together like he was cold. “I thought you were on the pill?”

“I was until I forgot to take some the last couple of days.”

“Why? How?” He asked while pacing around. “We were to talk about another baby after I was stable at work.”

“I know. I am so sorry about that.”

“How do you know you are pregnant?” He asked.

“I bought several pregnancy test kits. I have only tested one and it gave out two lines.”

“This is bad.” He said and left the kitchen.

I sat there not knowing what to do. I decided to give him space for a while. I did not follow him to the bedroom. I returned to the living room and watched cartoon with Chloe. I was scared, nervous and yet excited for it all.

I looked at the clock that was near the T.V. It was 6.43pm. I started preparing dinner. I cooked fried rice, spinach on the side and beef stew. I put a little bit on the red plate that Chloe likes and feed her. She is usually a fussy eater but she was really calm as I gave her the food. In ten minutes, we were done.

I left Chloe to continue playing with her doll and I went to check on Fred. I found him on the bed, working on his laptop. I went and sat next to him.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

“Yes. Just a little busy.” He responded without even looking at me.

I looked at him. Why is he acting this way? He is not the only one affected by this news.

“You know what? You may decide to ignore the matter at hand or you can talk to me and we will look for a way forward.” I said and walked out. I was so angry.

He run after me. “I am not ignoring you.”

“Then why can’t you just talk to me?” I asked. I was standing next to the kitchen.

“I am trying to process this all. And why were you so careless that you did not even take the pills?” He asked.

“Maybe you should be the one taking them! Maybe you would not forget to pop each daily.” I shouted.

“Kate. Do not talk like that.” He said trying to hold me down.

“What? Why are you acting like this is a sin that we have committed? We are married, aren’t we?” I asked.

“Then if it is true that I am pregnant, you should step up and support me in this.” I responded. “Not act like a baby.”
